Mon, 24 May 2010 15:07:23 -0700 Mugasha + Last.fm Scrobbling = <3 http://teamblog.mugasha.com/mugasha-lastfm-scrobbling-3 http://teamblog.mugasha.com/mugasha-lastfm-scrobbling-3 Hey everybody! Ever since we first launched Mugasha about 10 months ago, one of the top feature requests has been the ability to "Scrobble" the music that you listen to on Mugasha to your Last.fm account. I'm excited to let you know that it's here!

For those who aren't familiar with Scrobbling, it's a service offered by Last.fm that enables you to record all the songs that you listen to. You can then see stats about your listening habits and share them with friends. It's actually pretty awesome. Check it out:

20100524-gtc5kgnwuijtx1eucbnyujyexw.png

It's easy to set up and get your Last.fm account connected.

First click "Settings" at the top right of Mugasha:

20100524-t51cx34xpnxhacieyyhkkdb278.png

On your "Settings" page look for the Last.fm section on the bottom right side of the page and click the "Connect Your Last.fm Account" button:

20100524-r25t77w2m2i5ncqdgt1q9aafk6.png

You'll then be taken to Last.fm where you can log in. If you don't have a Last.fm account yet, you can quickly register for one there too:

20100524-c4ij6ayrcj5yt146kqyb8xgnux.png

Then just click the "Yes, allow access" button, to give Mugasha permission to post to your Last.fm account:

You're good to go. Mugasha will now automatically scrobble all of your listens to your Last.fm account. Enjoy your new found ability :)

Thanks for using Mugasha. You're the peeps we do it for. Cheers!

Wed, 17 Feb 2010 20:29:14 -0800 Seamless Login and Sign Up Without Music Interruption http://teamblog.mugasha.com/seamless-login-and-sign-up-without-music-inte http://teamblog.mugasha.com/seamless-login-and-sign-up-without-music-inte
At Mugasha, our goal is to make it really easy to listen to and navigate the site. We know we have a log way to go, but starting today we are making it really easy to login and sign up. You can now login or signup while playing a set, and the page won't refresh the page or stop playback. We use some neat Javascript/Ajax to make this happen. Many of you have requested this feature. Many of you also want to browse the website while listening to music, heck even we would love that. That change is a bit more involved and we will slowly transition Mugasha, where you will be able to browse the site while playing a set.

Tracking plays is important.
There is another reason why we care so much about this feature. We noticed that people love listening to long sets but often forget to login. If you are logged in we can archive all your plays so you have easy access to history of what you have been listening to. Also, you can easily like tracks and sets and make comments. Play history will be a big part of making it easy to discover new music for people. We are currently working on some new features that will help your friends and followers (oooh what?) discover and keep track of new music, based on your listening habits.

So these new features...
Yes, so we are working on new features. Many of you might have been subscribing to shows. You will soon receive notifications through email/Facebook in an email digest of all your subscriptions. When you subscribe to a show, Mugasha will notify you about new sets part of that show as they become available on the site. If you subscribe to a lot of shows, we will send you an weekly digest of all the new sets in one email. Don't worry we don't like spam either.

I also mentioned following users. We are working on a new dashboard. You will be able to follow users and artists that interest you. The Dashboard will be similar to a live stream on Facebook, where you will have a real time view of what your followers/friends are listening to, liking, engaging and doing things around the site. This will make it fun and easy to discover new music and artists on Mugasha. Stay tuned, more information on this is coming soon.

Styles.
They are coming soon. You will be able to find sets and shows tagged with various styles (genres).

iPhone and Android mobile apps.
We are close to launching the Mugasha beta iPhone and Android applications. More information and form to signup for the free beta app next week.

Feedback.
Please, please we need your feedback. Leave your comments or requests on http://feedback.mugasha.com or send us an email. feedback@mugasha.com

Thu, 21 Jan 2010 20:47:00 -0800 Mugasha Friends - Skribit is Ready For Showtime! http://teamblog.mugasha.com/mugasha-friends-skribit-is-ready-for-showtime http://teamblog.mugasha.com/mugasha-friends-skribit-is-ready-for-showtime

Skribit just launched and is out of beta. I am sure many of your are asking what is Skribit?

They do a good job explaining what it is. Check out the tour on their website and their about page

"Skribit cures writer's block by tapping your blog's readership for post suggestions. They are the ones reading your blog, so it makes sense to ask them for ideas on what to write about next. Once you have received a few suggestions, your readers may also follow suggestions to make sure you know exactly what topics are popular with your readers and so they receive notifications when suggestions are updated."

Skribit was launched by our good friend Paul Stamatiou and few other folks (@Stammy, @cyu, @alexcoomans, @lance). Paul is a blogger, he writes mainly about tech and reviews a lot of cool gadgets. I read his blog pretty regular and found out about Startup Weekend a few years ago, which is where he started working on Skribit. Ironically Mugasha was also founded during Portland Startup Weekend in May of 2008.

I would love to have Skribit for our Mugasha blogs. The team blog and Mugasha Aux blog are powered by Posterous. Currently Posterous does not support javascript so using it is out of question. Perhaps we can persuade our friends at Posterous to offer Skribit as a plugin in the near future.

In the mean time, if you are are a blogger check out Skribit and give them some feedback. I am sure they would love to hear what you think.

Hey Mugasha-villians!

How've you all been? Things keep chuggin' along here at Mugasha HQ. We had a great launch! If you want to revel in all the great things the blogs had to say about us, check our press page, lol.

New Shows

Since we talked last we launched 3 new shows on Mugasha.

The first was Marcie's "Behind The Lyric". If you haven't heard it yet, it's a really unique show filled with short interviews from top EDM artists talking about the inspiration behind the lyrics of top tracks. It's awesome.

Next was Silk Royal Showcase from the Silk Royal A&R guy, Jacob Henry. Each month Jacob showcases new stuff coming out of the Silk Royal label and it's affiliates. Killer tracks and guestmixes from artists like Solarity, Proff, Ad Brown, etc.

The most recent show is the Drum & Bass Arena Podcast. We know many of you have been wanting to get some DNB goodness on Mugasha. Well, we got one of the best DNB shows out there. It's a weekly show, featuring new music and guestmixes from some of the hugest DNB acts out there. Think DJ Rap, Sub Focus, Marky, Pendulum, etc.

Mugasha T-shirts!

We are working on making some Mugasha t-shirts, so you can show your Mugasha love in the offline world, too! Keep an eye out for them going on sale shortly. In the meantime, there's still time to win a free (as in beer) Mugasha hoodie, by voting for your favorite shirt color scheme.

Quick Survey (and win a free shirt)

Speaking of your opinion, we'd love to hear it. We'd like to know a little bit more about you are using Mugasha and get your feedback about how we're doing. This helps us understand what we are doing well and how we can improve. We'll even give out a free Mugasha shirt to a lucky person who completes the survey! Take the survey.

Free Deadmau5 Tickets Contest

Last but not least, we are super excited for the Deadmau5 show coming up on October 28th, here in Portland. We have a pair of tickets to give away to the show and, for good measure, we'll throw in a sweet Mugasha t-shirt! The contest ends tomorrow (Tuesday, Oct. 27th), so don't delay. There are 2 easy ways to register to win:

  1. Send a message on twitter with the hashtag: #deadmau5pdx. Maybe something like "Can't wait for the Deadmau5 show! Tweet #deadmau5pdx for a chance to win free tix!"
  2. You can also register using Facebook. All you have to do is invite 10 friends to the Deadmau5 event listing! After you've done that just let us know in the comments here.

That's it! If you want to get more frequent updates, subscribe to the Team blog and the Aux Blog. If you just want to chat, send us an email at team@mugasha.com.

Hope you're all doing well.

Cheers!

Sat, 19 Sep 2009 14:30:18 -0700 Ads on Mugasha http://teamblog.mugasha.com/ads-on-mugasha http://teamblog.mugasha.com/ads-on-mugasha

Hey Mugashians!

How's it going with y'all? I just wanted to quickly bring you up to speed about the ads on Mugasha. We've spent the last few weeks working to figure out how to get the best ads possible on Mugasha. We know that nobody really loves ads, but most people don't mind too much if they are at least relevant, attractive, and not too obtrusive.  ...and the ads help us pay SOME of our costs.

We've tried several approaches and a bunch of different companies. There have been a few hiccups and some pretty ugly ads:

Yuck

I think we are starting to get it figured out, though. In fact, there is currently a pretty awesome campaign running. It's an ad for a dubstep artist battle.

Nice

You can play 2 songs right from the ad (no pop-ups or anything) and vote for the song you like better. Winners advance to the next round. It's actually pretty fun...and I am not just sayin' that ;-)

We'll keep working to make them as good as possible and hopefully get some deals with products that you'll like. Let us know if you come across any especially terrible ads on the site. Thanks for bearing with us.

Also, if you work for a company that would like to advertise on Mugasha, we'd love to talk. Email advertising@mugasha.com

Cheers!

Marcie-internal-ad

We are very excited to announce the launch of Behind The Lyric on Mugasha! Marcie is one of the premier vocalists in the EDM scene today. She has teamed up on tracks with the likes of TyDi, D:Folt, Yamin, and many more and seen DJ support from the worlds top acts: Armin van Buuren, Tiesto, Paul van Dyk, Markus Schulz, Ferry Corsten, Paul Oakenfold...the list goes on and on. How about I just let Marcie tell you about the show in her own words. Take it away, Marcie!

Hello!

I'm Marcie and I'm excited that all the episodes of Behind The Lyric are now being shared on Mugasha!

I'm a Singer/Songwriter with releases out in many genres. As a listener and a musician, I am always interested to hear how Artists come up with the ideas for their tunes. What stories are they telling? What happened in their life that makes them want to write, and how does music help them in their life?

Behind The Lyric features Singer/Songwriters telling the stories behind their Dance Music tracks. I've interviewed Jes Brieden, Paul Oakenfold, Ferry Corsten, Nadia Ali, Jaren, Zara Taylor, Roger Shah, Matt Darey, Tara McDonald, and many more. It's a show that focuses on the craft of songwriting, and the personal elements that go into an artists work. The show also explores the impact of songs on listeners. I wanted to get away from the 'hype' and image oriented elements of the scene. My show is meant to focus on the heart and soul of the artist and the listener.

I hope you will enjoy listening to the artists personal stories mixed atop the music much like a director's commentary on a dvd.

The artist participation has been phenomenal, with each bringing unique insight into the lyric writing process. It has been an amazing whirlwind of activity putting this show together! When I first started it, I could only dream it would go as far as it has. I'm grateful that the artists have opened themselves up on the show, and I love the feedback I get from listeners. I've learned more than ever before about how music is a lifeforce for so many.

Thank you for listening. Please come visit me online, and I hope you enjoy all the episodes of 'Marcie presents Behind The Lyric' here on Mugasha!

Best,

Marcie

So there you have it. Marcie really hits the nail on the head. The show is like a director's commentary to some of the biggest dance music tracks and artists. Very unique, very cool. We are very excited to have the entire back catalog of Behind The Lyric and of course all the future episodes. She has done some amazing interviews on her show and, undoubtedly, has lots more planned.

Welcome aboard, Marcie!

Tue, 01 Sep 2009 23:59:00 -0700 Post-launch Update http://teamblog.mugasha.com/post-launch-update http://teamblog.mugasha.com/post-launch-update

More than one year ago at Startup Weekend Portland, we pitched the idea behind Mugasha. It's crazy when we think about Mugasha today, that people are using Mugasha and listening to thousands of tracks daily.

A recap of the last few weeks.

Mugasha out of beta
Mugasha had been in private beta since January 7, 2009.  On August 20th we launched it publicly. Now anyone can listen to the sets for free and without an account. Although there are some great benefits of creating an account. You can easily create an account using Facebook Connect or simply through a login and password on the website. An account lets you keep a history of all the music you listen to, like tracks and sets (bookmarks) and subscribe to sets.

More Sharing
You can share each individual track through Facebook, twitter and other social sites. We are adding set sharing very soon.  Sharing is a big part of the the Mugasha experience, it really helps your friends and followers discover new music through your listening experience.

More Music
There are over 25 different sets by different Djs on Mugasha. With hundreds of individual sets covering many genres. We are adding more shows in the coming weeks. We are going to be adding more music that will cover other sub-genres ( less trance! :)  )

MOG Music Network
Mugasha is part of the MOG network now. It's a music network that has tons of other partners that create really good content. They will be serving all the ads on our site. We hope they will be nicer looking and more relevant than the Google Ads.

Growth and more Users
We have seen quite a bit of growth in terms of new users and usage over the last 2 weeks. The launch and a lot of blog coverage obviously creates a nice spike. Although, it seems like the launch (and marketing push) has created enough chatter that our growth should stay consistent. I will be talking about this more in detail in another blog post after a few weeks and share some numbers with you.

Twitter Recommendations and Mobile Apps
We are working on a new feature that will recommend music to Twitter users based on their music-related tweets. More on this soon. We are also looking into iPhone and Android applications as many of you have requested. We want them as much as you do, so stay tuned.

Sun, 23 Aug 2009 15:08:00 -0700 New Show: Andy Caldwell Podcast http://teamblog.mugasha.com/new-show-andy-caldwell-podcast http://teamblog.mugasha.com/new-show-andy-caldwell-podcast carousel.png?1250633344

We are very excited to announce the newest show on Mugasha: the Andy Caldwell Podcast. Many of you probably know Andy's career and music pretty well already. But, If you're one of the uninitiated, check out his bio:

Los Angeles-based Andy Caldwell wears many guises: Songwriter, producer, classically trained pianist and trumpeter, remixer, DJ and label owner (of the recently re-launched Uno Recordings). The journey of his 14-year and counting recording career has brought many accolades and honors, from writing Grammy nominated songs and sharing stages with legends like James Brown to making the tunes of choice for countless top DJs worldwide. Flying more than 200,000 miles and playing more than 100 shows a year, Andy Caldwell is a preeminent fixture on the global dance music scene.

In 2008, Kaskade’s “Sorry,” which Caldwell co-wrote (along with “Everything”), was nominated for a Grammy for Best Remixed Recording. Caldwell has also made waves as a remixer of both underground heroes and mainstream icons alike. He has collaborated with DJ/producer Behrouz on several remixes for the Yoshitoshi label, including the Grammy-nominated “Safe From Harm” by Narcotic Thrust and Hani’s “Never Felt This Way,” the latter of which was featured on Deep Dish’s Global Underground Toronto CD. His work for superstar artists has emerged officially for the likes of the Bee Gees and Jennifer Lopez and unofficially via his immensely popular bootleg of Nirvana’s seminal hit “Come As You Are.” Andy’s music has been licensed to dozens of television shows, video games and movies including ‘Six Feet Under’, ‘Sex in the City’, ‘FIFA Soccer 08’ and ‘Forces of Nature’.

His  knack  for A&R  leads  him to  find  and  sign  tunes that  have  gone  on  to be  licensed the world over, as in  the  Trentemøller  remix of  Yoshimoto’s  “Du What You Du.”   And  with  the  recent re-launch  of  his  label  Uno Recordings,  Caldwell  once  again  has an official  outlet  all  his  own to  nurture  and  discover tomorrow’s talents that are pushing stylistic boundaries.
